The Watchtower continues to layoff men and women that have given their entire life to the organization.

If you are a Christian, the phrase ‘Kingdom of God’ should be quite familiar to you, as Jesus spoke of this Kingdom often when he preached the Good News. However, if you are a Jehovah’s Witness, the Kingdom takes on very unique significance. The publication, Benefit From Theocratic Ministry School Education, says, “Note, however, that the message that Jesus said would be proclaimed in our day goes beyond what his followers preached in the first century.”

Contrast this with what the Apostle Paul said at Galatians 1:8 which says, “However, even if we or an angel out of heaven were to declare to you as good news something beyond what we declared to you as good news, let him be accursed.”

That aside, what is this unique take of the Kingdom? Notice a few quotes from the August 1, 2004 Watchtower, in the article entitled, “God’s Kingdom Government—A Reality Today”

* God’s Kingdom is a real government that has accomplished wonderful deeds since its inauguration in heaven in 1914
* No less can be expected of Jesus Christ now that the Kingdom government is in operation. Whenever disasters—earthquakes, famines, floods, hurricanes, storms, or volcanic eruptions—strike, the Christian congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses responds quickly to the needs of fellow believers and others in the affected areas.
* Ever since its establishment in 1914, God’s heavenly Kingdom has been gathering and organizing its subjects from peoples around the world.
* This activity has resulted in the most significant movement of modern times—an international brotherhood of over 6,000,000 Christians in more than 230 lands of the earth.
* Would you not agree that for a government to be able to bring hundreds of ethnic groups together in peace and harmony, it must be effective and stable—and real?
* Here, then, is another factor that testifies to the reality of God’s Kingdom—its effective program of education that reaches and transforms not only the mind but also the heart.
* An outstanding aid in achieving this worldwide unity is this magazine, The Watchtower.

Based on the above, the Watchtower clearly teaches that God’s Kingdom has been in operation since 1914. How has that Kingdom manifested itself? Primarily, through the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Through this Organization, the King Christ Jesus exercises his kingship on the earth. The work of this Organization, the occasional aid given in times of disaster (often accompanied with the ‘suggestion’ that any insurance payouts be given to the Watchtower), the unity in doctrine and practice(enforced by shunning), the preaching the Good News (handing people Watchtower literature after a 60-second pitch) would then be the work of the King himself.

As a Jehovah’s Witness, I believed that Bethel was the manifestation of Kingdom rule. It was the closest one could get to Paradise on this side of Armageddon. I envied those who served there, for in my view, the closer to the center of the Organization, the closer one would get to the King himself. One of the actions that Christ had taken after becoming King in 1914 was to appoint a Faithful and Discreet Slave. Therefore that Watchtower Society which represented this Slave would always behave discreetly, with foresight, with “wisdom from above”. (James 3:17)
The Watchtower teaches many material blessings that the Kingdom would bring about. The Isaiah’s Prophesy book, volume II, says this, “What a joy it will be to build your own home and then to live in it! Under Kingdom rule, there will be no shortage of satisfying work.”

Bethel Layoffs

Corporations regularly layoff and “downsize” employees to boost profit margins and staunch economic blood loss. But at what cost?

As a person who has been affected by downsizing and the ever changing economy, I looked forward to a Paradise in which the King would do away with unemployment and ensure everyone had a home. And who would be assisting the King as co-rulers in providing blessings? Why, some of the very people who now direct the Watchtower Society. Unlike the ‘worldly’ organizations who only look after themselves and put profits above people, surely representatives of God’s Kingdom would be better than that. As they provided spiritual food at the “proper time”, they would discreetly respond to changing circumstances well in advance, guided by a spirit of Christian love and compassion. And surely with Christ and holy spirit to guide them, they could not fail.

This is what I believed. And then came the Bethel layoffs. As our dear Brother Arp7601 says in his videos, “What was your first clue?” This was mine and it shocked me to the core.
Here, “God’s Organization” was behaving exactly like a worldly business. Thousands of people had given their youth to Jehovah God, putting the Kingdom first as they understood it, and foregone opportunities for educational and career advancement in this world, as well as marriage and having children. Surely, if they put the Kingdom first by serving at the very instrument that Christ was using to manifest his rule on earth, he would provide for them. (Matthew 6:33). But they were being cast off, some after decades at Bethel and with nothing to show on their resumes.

There are reports that there is another round of big layoffs in progress currently–not only longterm Bethelites–but older Circuit and District overseers as well. And they are being replaced by those younger in age. As has been pointed out, those older would more likely to develop expensive health issues.
As many a JW apologist will point out, these longtimers were never guaranteed lifetime employment. They signed up with this knowledge. Everything is perfectly legal. But this is not a question of legality, it is one of loyalty. If this Organization were from God, how would such an Organization treat ones who have loyally served many decades, who having given their Heavenly Father their all? Would such an Organization cast them aside? Is this Kingdom rule?
With all investments that the Watchtower has made, both in a billion dollars in real estate and tens of millions in the stock market and hedge funds, not to mention Circuit Leasing, would they not have the means? 1 John 3:17 says, “But whoever has this world’s means for supporting life and beholds his brother having need and yet shuts the door of his tender compassions upon him, in what way does the love of God remain in him?”

Or is this a problem that donations aren’t what they used to be? When the Watchtower was first published, the magazine said, “Zion’s Watch Tower has, we believe, JEHOVAH for it’s backer, and while this is the case it will never beg nor petition men for support. When He who says: ‘All the gold and silver of the mountains are mine,’ fails to provide necessary funds, we will understand it to be time to suspend the publication.”

the kingdom

What does God think of these money-saving layoffs? Does Watchtower truly put their trust in “him of whom all the gold belongs”?

Is Jehovah backing the Watchtower? Does it truly represent God’s Kingdom? Then why isn’t Kingdom rule being manifested in how the Watchtower treats those who’ve served loyally for decades? Does not the Bible speak of treating older people respectfully? How is it respectful to cast them out after years of loyal service and force them fend for themselves?

James 1:27 (NWT) says, “The form of worship that is clean and undefiled from the standpoint of our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their tribulation, and to keep oneself without spot from the world.” Like many Christian groups today, first century Christianity made organized provisions for older people, like widows, who found it difficult to fend for themselves. This was viewed as the highest form of sacred service. What provisions has the Watchtower Society made for orphans and widows? Do they at least provide job training?

James goes on to say in James 2:14-17, “Of what benefit is it, my brothers, if a certain one says he has faith but he does not have works? That faith cannot save him, can it? If a brother or a sister is in a naked state and lacking the food sufficient for the day, yet a certain one of you says to them: “Go in peace, keep warm and well fed,” but you do not give them the necessities for [their] body, of what benefit is it? Thus, too, faith, if it does not have works, is dead in itself.”

‘Go in peace, keep warm and well fed.’ Is this not what the Watchtower is saying to those longtimers who served them for many decades? James shows the fruitage of true faith would be integral to helping others in a practical, even material way. By their works, does the Watchtower display a living faith? Or a dead faith? For faith without works is dead.
When the Bethel layoffs first happened, the story The Emperor’s New Clothes came to my mind. In the story, swindlers pretend to dress the Emperor in the finest clothes, but in truth, he is naked. Everyone, including the Emperor, pretends he has clothes. Everyone fears to voice the truth about the matter. Everyone praises how fine the Emperor’s clothes are, until, a child voices the obvious truth, “But he hasn’t got anything on!”

I’m not saying that the Kingdom that Christ proclaimed has no clothes. It is that the Watchtower shows by their works that they fail to represent the King and the Kingdom. Truly, it is the kingdom of the Watchtower that has no clothes. To those who have been affected by these layoffs, our hearts and prayers go out to you. We sincerely sympathize with the suffering this has caused.

Yours in Christ,
Londo

34 Comments on Bethel Layoffs Reveal a Kingdom without Clothes

One day 3 people showed up at the pearly gates of heaven, a nun, a Christian and a GB member of WTBTS . Well, Jehovah asks each one , why do you think you should get in to heaven? The nun answers, well I helped the poor and served at many hospitals to help the sick. God says, ok you’r in. The Christian says, I help my brothers love one another and put faith in Christ’s love for us. God says , you’r in. The GB member says, hey, you are in my spot!

There was a tragic story in a nearby congregation a decade or two ago. A young man was studying to become one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He had become an unbaptized publisher and was making progress in the program. Then he developed a cancerous infection in one of his legs and was going to have it amputated.

The elders would not announce his circumstances to the congregation so that he could receive visitors and brotherly support because he wasn’t baptized yet.

Let that sink in for a moment.

If a technical qualification like that is required just to earn basic human decency, then how much could you trust the loyalty earned by baptism after that?

For the most part, everyone agreed afterward that it was a calloused and unreasoning decision by the body of elders (credit to the congregation where it’s due), but it’s difficult to imagine how such a miserable situation could be made that much more tortuous by those professing to be Christian.

Sister Rupunzel mentioned in a recent post the “gifts of mercy” offered by Cornelius that had been found favorable by God. One would think that since Cornelius wasn’t Jewish this would make it clear to JWs that Jehovah’s favor can rest on those outside of the Org. who are offering fine works. How judgmental would you have to be to refuse to recognize the fine works and loyalty INSIDE of the Org. just because someone hadn’t been baptized yet?

Thanks for the post JJ and Londo. I’m sure many others here are remembering similar circumstances.

I wonder if this recent article(Oct. 15, 2013 pg 17-20) about Malcolm Allen, who left Bethel (had been in circuit & district work too) at 53 (approx),due to having to take care of aging parents of his and wife. He stated he had to find secular work. But he states their life since has been a blessing, etc.

So was this article written to distract the thought of other older ones now in such positions getting lay-offs?? Right under the Title, states “Life is unpredictable at times, uncertain, and even hard to deal with.” Life is that way but now so is Bethel as well as the whole organization. Their ‘new world coming soon’ is also unpredictable and uncertain. The article was very manipulative.

Also, speaking of Malcolm’s wife that “she has never complained about her lot in life or challenged the principles of headship and cooperation.” Ugh!

If Scripture seems to condemn them, it is because they stand condemned. At the very least, the Watchtower could offer an official apology. But the words “I’m sorry” are not in the Organization’s vocabulary.

Miscreant Droid (in reference to Repunzels post)

That’s because when ‘works’ is mentioned they go JW-mode and automatically think ‘work’ = manual labor. In strongs concordance many words can be used to sum up the Greek word er’gon which means an act, a deed, or even labour to some extents. But being that the JW faith (ha) is of course a works-based system they use the works definition to support their doctrine….cognitive bias at it’s best. So by doing so things like giving to orphans and widows, which is a clear instruction to all Christians to manifest a giving attitude, falls by the wayside and is replaced by the preaching work. I had this debate with my wife when she asked why I don’t wAnt to go out in service. I told her I didn’t believe in turning in hours to prove I’m faithful to God and Christ. She responded with “well how will you get blessing and show a giving spirit? How will you survive Armageddon if you are not out in field service?” I said “where’s the scripture that says that I’ll die at Armageddon if I’m not out there ‘auxiliary pioneering’ (service equalling about 30 hours a month).she said “it’s in the Bible”. I again disagreed and she finally gave in and admitted it wasn’t in there but that the implication was there. Anyways, (sorry I had to vent!!) the point is others judge your heart condition, your faith and ‘level’ of spirituality soley based on your manual labor in field service, meeting attendance, yadda yadda yadda. But God forbid you donate to salvation army or join the YMCA…..

I have had a few close friends and people that I know that went to bethel to “serve jehovah”, half of them I must admit went for what they thought was the right reasons, the other half wanted to add that to their “JW Resume” if you will, and not one of them came back with some kind of special newfound skill that they were able to use to get a job, one of my friends started to work for his inlaws tortilla company in LA, the other had to go back to school because the “construction and engineering” work he did for so long required a degree among other things to be able to work in that field…and so on and so on. Luckily my friends left bethel while they were still young enough to do something with their lives, except for one family friend who in our native country served as a C/O, he was sent to a congregation to serve as an elder in a rural area and a few of us that knew him had to send him money for him to be able to support himself and his wife because it was hard for them to make a living at all, the friends in the rural area of this third world country already had little and could not afford to help them much, it is sad that he was cast out like that with no experience in the real world where you have to go to school and search for a job and apply and go to an interview…etc. How can they ever expect these poor brothers and sisters to fend for themselves after serving their whole lives within this organization? They only know how to socialize with other JWs for the most part and have never had a real job (not to say that they did not work hard for the advancement of the organization), it is just one of the things that has always affected me even when I was growing up as a JW.

Not too sure what that is, my wife and children are Jehovah’s Witnesses and I don’t think I’ve ever seen that book before. is very interesting to know that they are doing layoffs amid also moving Bethel to another location. which I have been informed by Jehovah’s Witnesses is because of the crime rate in New York City. I really didn’t believe that in the first place. taking care of people is not the priority of the organization itself. I have known individual Jehovah’s Witnesses that will give everything they have to help someone. but the sad thing is I have never truly noticed where they will bend over backwards to help others that are not jehovahs witnesses except for just a few times and my mother is one of them

Check their bags!! I think the WT move is about money. It is sad but true what you say about the care shown by JWs in general. Many are too busy with the requirements to preach, and prepare for and attend meetings, plus their other daily responsibilities and pursuits, that there isn’t much time for genuine “brotherly love”. Yet, they are mainly caring people, just misdirected!!

I would have thought the key to anyone being able to express themselves freely is to feel comfortable with what you believe. Even if it is wrong or requires adjustment. This is something that is particularly hard to do when what you believe is a prescription based on the dictates of a small group of men. If you empower people to have the courage of their Bible based convictions, without the desire to please men, then speech becomes a natural expression of their faith in God. 20. Brother Skeptical says:

    Hello JJ,

The original meaning of Cognitive Dissonance according to the American Psychology School of thought is different from the feelings you felt after the 2011 Convention. The fact is you did not experience this if you created jwstruggle One Thousand Days ago. The spirit of C.D. is beyond feeling uncomfortable, if you truly we suffering from C.D. your wife would never have known you had any negative thoughts against the Watchtower Society. The phenomena of suffering from c.d. is your begin to rationalize facts away to adjust to a false prediction, false teachings and common sense becomes uncommon as you push harder to make the truth fit the actual Truth. Using the analogy of the chimps putting shapes in a wood board, if you had suffered from this disorder, circles and squares would be smashed into the shapes of the octagon and triangle.

I don’t think you went through this experience because some light went off in your head, you were never the same after that 2011 and your wife would have loved for you to go nut-job gung-ho for the Watchtower. This article starts with the basics of this disorder individuals on jwn love to misquote.

“This also could mean adjusting your beliefs to align with what actually happened” Psychology Today May 25, 2011 after Harold Campings false predictions rallied the troops to push for the October 2011 “End Time” date. Give yourself more credit, you never suffered from c.d. or jwstruggle would not exist! Read up how this syndrome in psychology was identified. The leaders of the UFO cult predicted the World would end in 1941 or so. They preached only they would survive and God would show up in a UFO and take them away. (Roswell, New Mexico Area 51 captured their god and has been chained for seventy years now.).

God never showed up to take the true UFO Cult away, after a brief period of mourning, God had given them time to change the minds of all the unbelievers, he pushed for more preaching of the UFO Cult Message and unbelievers should praise the woman who led this group because her prayers averted the end of the world! Sounds like Rutherford when the End never came in 1914, 1919 and 1925? Rutherford never suffered from c.d., he was drunk with power of running the Organization and using it’s resources to enjoy the finest things of the world while enjoying his incredible power he lorded over his followers. JWs who did not leave and believed the lies told by Rutherford’s lame logic, they began to preach more rabidly, spend more money to preach Rutherford’s message and argue “we are not wrong, we were given more time to spread the Message!”

Is that how you felt, if so jwstruggle is not a rabid pro-GB website (Slash one from the list). You had doubts, your mind started to think for the first time in Bible terms, not man made rules! (Strike Two). Your wife noticed your change for the worse, instead of blindly obeying the screwy explanations on Blood, the Infinite Regression Generation, you saw through that as false and opened your mind to new thinking, c.d. suffers don’t open their minds wide open like you did (Strike Three, Your Out!). Please don’t think I am criticizing you, I think you should be proud you never suffered from c.d. in the original spirit of the American Psychology Association, or you would still be banging at my door with Mike Lucaiaaaa and Dave InGrim Reape (The Union hating couple, they hate organized labor, why?)

    http://www.psychologytoday.com.....ld-camping

    http://www.psychologytoday.com.....-armstrong

“Lance Armstrong generates dissonance. The man who became famous for never giving up is giving up. He is a winner and a loser. Yesterday he was quoted as saying “I refuse to participate in a process that is so one-sided and unfair.”With his unimaginatively weak statement the man who almost single-handedly galvanized attention interest and fascination on the Tour De France and raising consciousness and money and funds for cancer has admitted to being another sports hero impostor. If there would have been truth behind his innocence Lance Armstrong would have fought this, and he did his own cancer, until he was victorious. But this giving up is as clear an admission of wrongdoing as can be, and also stops the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency from testifying about anything else they might know about him, including10 former teammates ready to testify against him. Lance Armstrong is a survivor and a liar; an incredibly strong man, and an incredibly weak man; a source of inspiration, and a source of disgrace and embarrassment; a hero and a villain. In short he has become the modern day exemplar of cognitive dissonance.

The theory of cognitive dissonance would predict that people would strive for dissonance reduction by using these three strategies. In other words groups will form as people use one of three dissonance reduction strategies. They might sound something like this:

“He shouldn’t have to keep defending himself against these charges. He was right to give up.”
“It doesn’t matter that they stripped him of his titles because he has already done so much good in the world.”
“We don’t need false heroes to raise money for cancer treatment, there are plenty of other good people to do that.”
But these biases nudge us away from reality. The truth now is that Lance Armstrong is both good and bad; inspiring and despicable; a legend and fake.

My hope is that another group forms based on allowing two truths to remain intact. The struggle is in trying not to make this dissonance even out, take it away, or stop it. Instead the work is to try and leave the truth as it is: Lance Armstrong is profoundly human.”

Eric, when did you show up to Dave Ingrim and Chris Wiltson’s Kingdom Hall? Was this before Cosmo was sent in to take over after the fights with your father-in-law and the letter he read to the Hall to ask for forgiveness when the publishers count was down to sixty and nobody was answering at meetings? Do you know the behind the scenes story of what happened with Bob Galiety and why him and his henchman “C Wiltson” were chastied by Jehovah’s Holy Spirit?

Why did pioneer sister Yvone leave that Kingdom Hall? Why does T+M O-bee-yappedee harbor a deep grudge from that disaster, they are still harboring grudges against the mess that left your last K.H. in shambles until Cosmo came to clean it up and wash all the bad things your ex-father inlaw caused. I think the brothers who came in to clean up that mess were not as skilled as Bob, he did know the Bible according to jw-theology better than anyone in that Hall until you arrived. You saw the truth, I was surprised he never stepped down after I heard everything behind closed doors of what and why and how.

Do you regret wasting your time listening to the mad ramblings of W.M and his loony wife who supports him? He must be really good in bed to keep a chick making $175,000 a year working part-time, don’t you think? Do you ever regret listening to him talk about himself for hours and hours without breathing? How did you get suckered into a bro-mance with him or at least that’s how he felt with you. He was a user looking for anyone who would listen how his dad beat the Hell out of him when he was a kid! I hated when he walked over to Oceanview looking for someone to talk to, he wasted to much time. He was a snake, I have no problem yelling B.M was a snake and a user!

Did he ever tell you the story he told everyone in his Hall, how his son and daughter hated him. Why would your kids hate you? You heard the charges his daughter made against him, he never could keep his trap shut.

I hate these people like Daahvvee and Shleezelah, Mikhail Luka and the rest of the nut-bags who used up your gas money and rarely drive their own cars in field service. I tried to pioneer using some of these bad Christians when I was in Ocean View, they were not cool. M+T Obee and weirdo-hall jumping Piousneer sister barbie montono worked with Ocean View and joined our group with the Weavers because they still had issues with Yvonne. Were you there when Chris read his letter of apology before everyone and promised to be more gentle and loving. He has not changed, he is still the pharisee and his wife knows more gossip than anyone in the circuit.

I left the Hall when the Weevers dumped that Hall, Daahve! was making some strange statements against a sister without real evidence and that’s when I left with Bob and Dianna to Oceanview. I was tired of the same crap, same C.W. and his judgement, lack of love and hatred of the weak Jehovah Witnesses. I don’t know of anyone Chris put in effort into except Walter Bell, maybe that was his one good deed he did. I spent days working with Chris in service, we drove the same route talking to the same people for years and service felt fradulent. We were at the Bagell Shop on Saturday before 11pm, what kind of worship is that to Jehovah?

Oceanview is not perfect, we have some weirdos but not like your former hall had. I don’t miss Bob Gallety (Know it all from prooftexting the Tower’s articles, I don’t miss his “mini-me” Chris nor the rest of these judgemental fruitloops. They can all go to Hell!

Chris loves to put himself up the seat of Moses, walk around the Kingdom Hall with his visual dress-tape measure and he use to give your daugters grief did he not? It was not Chris who was pulling the strings to bug your daughters, his wife keeps his testicles in her book-bag. Chris is a sad little pinhead, if not for her dad, they would have nothing. What if her dad (Kind man who Chris and Dan Krustkall helped get removed for the Body because Dan is always looking for ways to cause trouble with any family except his own. He is so super-righteous but has no problem adding a apartment to his own house, he is not a good man but a mindless ghoul trying to bring the congregation down. I doubt you are aware they are many men in that complex who hold views far different from the Watchtower’s Governing Body “Pledge of Allegiance”do you?

You are not alone, you have people from my hall sneaking on this website, others from Nipomo and even your own former Hall. It might surprise you to know who is curious how you are doing. Instead of calling you names, they talk about the good points you bring out and how in no small time you might turn them into a apostate! How’s that for making a impact, be patient because you are working with long held beliefs from High Group Mind Control, patience. I have a idea how to get your website some huge massive hits, might boost the new count by 100s, just a idea that will work!

    Hiding in Ocean View!
What do you miss from the Kingdom Hall, Bob and Judgmental wife Kunrudy? You got my post on Dave Idiot saying the Deaf “using a language and do this with Jehovah’s anger because they are winking, tapping their feet and using a language nobody knows how to understand. The deaf are up to all types of voodoo and trickery, why does the Elder-body allow him to get away with saying insane things and keep him? He quoted all Jobs verses on blowing a kiss to the Moon, winking at badness (Those deaf brothers are old pagan worshiping devils according to this buffoon!)

I have to put my 2c worth in on this post.
I atm am still a “practising”lol. Jw,I had to step down from being an elder as my son is epeleptic and the strain of his care and congregational service was just too much, something had to give as both me and my wife where exhausted emotionally and finacially,we had spent all our savings and more trying to find a cure for our boy, easily $90 000.
Stepping down was surreal experience,it was like I no longer existed,it was the same feeling of getting out of a car in the middle of the desert and the car just driving off without me,that describes it exactly,I just wonder how many more there are like me who worked tirelessly for “Jehovah”only to find that it was in reality an organization that was served.
To this day I have never had any help from the org with my son aside from a pat on the back and your a jolly good fellow,we have oxygen supplied to us for our son by Anglicare,a Christian charity, not by the WTBS
I know that here in Australia most of the affordable nursing homes are subsidised by the major church groups, which will be the nursing homes that most ageing jws will be able to afford as they have no real retirement plan ,none of them will be looked after in their old age by the WTBTS,as has been said,is this how the kingdom rules?
